De Anza Accounting

ACCT 1B- 07 Tuesday, Thursday ONLY

Use of Websites in Class

CPAscott is my own personal website. I use it to communicate public information such as the course syllabus.  The site is open year round and can be viewed at any time.  While information on this site does change, it is an excellent place to preview a course before the quarter starts.

Canvas is the new Learning Management System (LMS) at De Anza College. (It replaces Catalyst, a system that some of you may have used previously.) Once the quarter starts and you are enrolled in my De Anza Accounting course, you will be able to get into Canvas.

Cengage is a website sponsored by the textbook publisher.  For this Accounting 1B course, the Cengage portion of the course will be accessed directly and is NOT INTEGRATED with Canvas.  (This is different from those of you who had my Accounting 1A course in Fall 2017.)  This site requires purchase of the textbook/access code.  The course syllabus explains the various purchase options. The publisher allows a short free trial period, so all students should be able to complete the first assignment without purchasing the textbook/access code.

Three different website will be used in this class.   Here is a partial list of resources/activities for each website.

Getting started in Canvas

Getting started in CengageNOW:

When you first register with Cengage be sure to use your name as it is

listed with the De Anza Admissions and Records Office!

Announcement 1.  If you do NOT want a hardcopy of the text and want only the Cengage Access Code (and the e-book for 90 days) you can buy the code directly from Cengage.  If you want to do this be sure to use the special De Anza Microsite. This is not recommended because the hardcopy of the book will be a permanent resource while the e-book access expires after 90 days, and because the price is about the same. You may also find it useful to bring the hardcopy to class.

Announcement 2. If you took Accounting 1B at De Anza prior to Fall 2017 (and purchased and used a Cengage Access Code for the Warren 26th edition) but did not complete or pass the course and you are retaking it, then you will need to buy another book.  De Anza is upgrading to the 27th  edition effective Fall 2017.  If you took Accounting 1B in the Fall of 2107 at De Anza and dropped the course, then you should be able to get a free replacement code.  Email the course instructor.

Announcement 3. For help with registration, sign-in, and assignment completion, please look at the following Cengage resources such as the student user guide and self-training videos.

Announcement 4. Here is a link to Cengage technical support.

Announcement 5. A variety of OPTIONAL assignments have also been placed on Cengage.  There is an optional (not for credit) assignment to help get started in the course.  It is named: “OPTIONAL Getting Started”.  Work this assignment if you want more information about how to effectively use Cengage to study Accounting. In addition, each chapter contains an optional “Adaptive Study Plan” assignment. For instance, the assignment for the first chapter is named “OPTIONAL Ch. 10 Study Plan”.  Work through these (if you want to) to help master the material in each chapter.  These Study Plans contain multiple choice quizzes that can help you prepare for the multiple choice questions on exams.  You can take the quiz and then press the “Submit Quiz” button (upper right of screen) to see the results.  However, DO NOT PRESS THE “SUBMIT ASSIGNMENT” BUTTON for the Study Plan itself.  You only have one chance or “take” for this assignment. If you submit the assignment itself, you will not be able to see it after you submit it.

There are also practice problems to help you get ready for course exams. For instance, “OPTIONAL Midterm 1 Preview” can be used to prepare for the first midterm.

Not all of the assignments are accessible at the beginning of the quarter.  More assignments will be opened up as the quarter progresses.
